Volksbildung und Alphabetisierung gelten in Europa als Erfolge der Aufklärung, des liberalen Staates und ihrer emanzipatorischen Programme. Neuere Forschungen legen jedoch nahe, dass es bereits im 17. Jahrhundert, im Zeitalter der Konfessionalisierung, hohe Alphabetisierungsraten gegeben hat. Die Reihe fragt nach dem Zusammenhang zwischen Konfession und Literalität. Sie analysiert dazu unbekannte oder vernachlässigte Quellenbestände und bietet neue Einsichten in die vormoderne Glaubens-, Bildungs- und Lebenswelt der Stadt- und Landbevölkerung.

This volume examines an early-modern source that has so far been largely overlooked, namely "Seelenbeschreibungen" ("descriptions of souls"), the written product of house visits by pastors or elders that were used to measure people’s personal religious knowledge. They provide information about catechetical knowledge, familiarity with prayers, and reading and writing competence, providing a unique insight into early modern lifeworlds.
Research on literacy highlights one of the fundamental issues facing societies, as only those who can read printed texts can participate in the written discourses of their time. Using the Descriptions of Souls, around 70,000 data sets on Zurich’s rural and urban populations between 1630 and 1770, this study disproves the paradigm of an illiterate Europe pre-1800. Literacy began before the Enlightenment within the scope of confessionalization.
