Abteilung Werke VI: Hermann-Dramen
Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock's Hermann Dramas are presented here for the first time in an historico-critical edition which takes account of the total extant manuscript inventory. „Hermanns Schlacht“ (Hermann's Battle) (1769) was a resounding success, but the sequels „Hermann und die Fürsten“ (Hermann and the Princes) (1784) and „Hermanns Tod“ (Hermann's Death) (1787) did not meet with the same resonance. The volume of critical apparatus contains selected documents and commentaries on the history of the origins and reception of the dramas.
This commentary volume concludes the series on Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock’s Hermann dramas. It provides variants, interpretations, and sources for each work in three separate sections. It also describes the genesis and effect of the dramas, explains the editorial apparatus for this edition, and presents selected contemporary documents and reviews.
