With its funding priority “Research for the Sustainable Development of Megacities of Tomorrow”, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research is focusing on energy and climate-efficient structures in nine fast-growing cities as they offer the opportunity for sustainable urban development. The programme supports projects on various topics: Transportation Management (Hefei, China), Energy and Climate Protection (Gauteng, South Africa), Urban Agriculture (Casablanca), Adaptation Planning (Ho Chi Minh City), Solid Waste Management (Addis Ababa), Water Management (Lima), Resource Efficiency (Urumqi, China), New Town Development (Tehran-Region), and Governance for Sustainability (Hyderabad, India). Outcomes have been generated in six thematic fields of action, serving as a structure for the book series. The books offer a variety of good practice, ranging from analytical instruments and strategic models to realised pilot-projects, innovative technologies, and locally implemented processes.

Volume 5 in this series
In focus of this volume are five emerging megacities and mega-urban regions across the globe. Located in different climatic areas, determined by different economic development conditions and political frameworks each city has to address different local challenges. Based on various case studies and pilot projects, the book shows the early conceptualisation and the further organisation of integrative spatial planning and urban design for sustainable and more energy-efficient urban structures and the adaptation of cities to climate change.

The significance of bottom-up approaches initiated by civil society as well as the importance of the local level as the level for implementation is often overlooked when dealing with megacity developments. The main aim of this volume is to retrospectively trace participatory and local action approaches to climate change adaptation and mitigation in urban areas from seven case studies of the programme. By bringing together experiences gained from pilot projects and action research, the volume narrates the “stories behind” individual activities and co-operation processes, illustrates ingenuous results and lessons learned, and formulates overarching conclusions and recommendations for future participatory field research and realisation of urban development projects.

The projects in the Future Megacities programme gain valuable experiences in developing energy efficient standards and urban structures with adequate conditions to treat resources with care and avoid unnecessary emissions. To achieve the ambitious objectives, it is essential to convince and enable people to take an active part in sustainable development. This requires qualification and education efforts at different levels, with different target groups and for different topics. This volume presents several proven and evaluated capacity building measures. Proper workmanship, individual responsibility and the ability for personal professional progress are presented in the categories Training Practice and Enabling Local Communities. The authors share their experience and inspire people to set up own comparable projects.

While the trend towards the growth of megacities creates huge challenges, it also offers the opportunity for reshaping mobility patterns in cities, promoting energy efficiency and principles of low carbon development. In this volume, an overview is provided of solutions comprising concepts for sustainable transportation through intelligent management, innovative instruments for integrated transport planning, modelling systems, adaptation strategies in the transport sector and concepts for enhancing public transit. Developed for five cities of the programme by transdisciplinary and international research teams in close collaboration with local stakeholders, they are presented on the background of big challenges ranging from data collection issues, modelling and planning in a fast growing environment to resistance of citizens against big infrastructure projects.

Volume 1 in this series
Solar energy is in focus worldwide. So is the role of cities and public governments for creating a more sustainable urban future. This volume highlights the role of solar energy and other solar related energy technologies for a low carbon and sustainable energy system, particularly for cities and city regions in the South. The articles refer to solar energy generation technologies, smart city planning concepts, as well as ‚passive‘ solar building design approaches. Thus, the volume takes a broad and applied approach by analysing projects and different solutions for a more efficient and solar oriented building design and technology implementation.

In addition to senior scientists, who have summarised their main results in the five volumes of the Future Megacities Book Series, ambitious young researchers have also contributed substantially to the German research programme on sustainable development of future megacities. The authors included in this volume were awarded the research programme's Young Researcher's Award in 2013, and a small but exemplary selection of their scientific work is presented here. Main topics are mobility with transit-oriented development and public transport in China, water demand and supply issues in the arid cities of Lima and Urumqi, governance questions in South Africa and India in the wide framework of energy, and improvement of urban planning procedures in Ho Chi Minh City.
