Increasingly, innovative construction design relies on interdisciplinary cooperation between architects, engineers and the construction industry. GAM.12 - Structural Affairs takes a look at the mechanics of cooperation in the dynamic work processes of contemporary architecture. New digital methods, materials and production methods require the participation of more and more specialised stakeholders in the design and construction process – they influence and determine the respective architectural design process from the outline idea through to detailed design and construction. GAM.12 investigates the potential and synergies of this development for the architectural process, and presents current projects and theoretical positions for discussion.

Writing has become an important component of the architectural practice. Architects experiment with new writing modalities in order to concretize architectural designs and built forms, or to generate and debate about guidelines and paradigms in architecture. Even literary texts like utopian stories, comics, or urban novels open for architecture imaginative space conceptions that go beyond mere geometrical and functional principles.
GAM Archiscripts is a collection of current positions on and analyses of forms of expression, and of practices in architectural writing and publishing.
With contributions from Pedro Gadanho, Jimenez Lai, Martino Stierli, Bernard Tschumi, WAI Think Tank, Julia Weber and many more.

Digital media have enriched architectural production in many ways. They have created their own separate array of simulation, design and planning instruments, new fabrication and construction processes and generate new spatial experiences. This expansion of our sensual perception and its effects on our physicality and intuitively steered processes are the matter of extensive discussion in architecture when it comes to designing the surroundings of our lives in the future. In this context it becomes clear that human intuition is once again gaining importance as the counterpart to rational processes. What should we think of this tendency? Does it create the potential for a more sensual and intuitive handling of complexity in architectural design? Or is it this endorsement of intuition a flight from media technology as it continues its advance into more and more aspects of our lives? The authors of GAM.10 focus on the new forms of interaction between digital and architectural worlds of knowledge and experiences.

GAM.09 is dedicated to the stratification of walls in architecture. The interest lies in the ways in which walls may be newly conceptualized. Very recent times have seen a multitude of designs, experiments, and developments that have expanded the conventional function of walls. One could propose that the traditional separation of external form and inner function be complemented by another perspective, one that articulates the wall function of lending support, securing, and retaining, together with qualities of an associative exchange between inside and outside. GAM introduces architectural designs that combine the invention of new techniques with the testing of their implementation. Walls and their functionality as an innovative field of design and analysis.

This book examines the density of urban areas and architectural production, in particular the open development of mid-sized historical cities with clear centralized concentration, to serve as a basis for new approaches to architectural design and planning.
