The De Gruyter Series in Presidential Politics, Leadership, and Policy Making places the chief American executive in the analytical forefront. Co-edited by leading scholars Meena Bose and Daniel E. Ponder, this innovative series highlights cutting-edge research on the presidency, the executive branch, individual United States Presidents, and their relations with other branches and levels of government as well as the international community. In this series, a diverse range of research experts examines the politics of the presidency and how executive leadership, agenda setting, power dynamics, and choices inform governance and policy making, primarily from the mid-twentieth century to the present.

The series takes a highly inclusive approach to Presidency studies, in order to ensure a comprehensive exploration of the presidency from multiple perspectives. Contributing authors bring an interdisciplinary mix of methodological tools and conceptual approaches to present scholarly studies of institutional change and the evolution of the presidency, Presidents’ interactions with other institutions and actors, key figures in the orbit of the presidency, and the multifaceted role of presidential leadership in making domestic, economic, and foreign policy. Topics include the President and immigration policy, relations with the judiciary or interest groups, race & ethnicity, the President and state-level policy, presidential decision-making & behavior, presidential campaigns, the President and international organizations, presidential rhetoric, and First Ladies. Studies examining US presidents in the light of other countries’ chief executives are also invited to be part of the series. The series primarily features original, sophisticated empirical findings and arguments – in the form of individual case studies as well as comparative analyses – and welcomes contributions to the literature in theory, experimental design, and research methods, as well. With original and nuanced analysis, these books make a unique, enduring contribution to understanding the office and impact of the President on politics, policy, and society in the United States and around the world.

Entries in the series will be of special interest to scholars and students of government & political science, international & comparative politics, public policy, leadership studies, political psychology, communication & media studies, history, American studies, and beyond.

In 2007 and 2008, Barack Obama ran for president with a message of a shared purpose uniting all Americans, and was elected with expectations that he would usher in a new national culture under an approach grounded in public engagement that would transcend partisan divisions. But in an institutional system designed for incremental and contested policy-making governance, enacting these transformational ambitions proved to be far more difficult than anticipated.

This innovative volume assesses the legacy of President Obama, with a conceptual focus on the challenge of meeting his goals with the realities of governing. A diverse group of political science, history, and communication studies experts systematically examines Obama’s performance, accomplishments, and shortcomings through the lens of the expectations gap – the tensions and obstacles of translating campaign promises into policies.

The wide, representative set of case studies address campaigning and coalition building, party polarization, presidential communication, executive power, leadership and decision-making, and domestic and foreign policy. With original and deep analysis, these scholars make a unique, enduring contribution to understanding the Obama presidency, the office of the president, and indeed American politics. This insightful, accessible book will be of great interest to students and scholars of the presidency, political communication & rhetoric, and broadly across US government and democracy.
