Nach einem Einbruch in den 1990er Jahren sind Marx-Rezeption und -Forschung seit der Milleniumswende zunächst kontinuierlich, in den letzten Jahren sprunghaft angewachsen. Dies hat zeitgeschichtliche Gründe wie die Finanzkrise des Jahres 2008 und ihre Folgen sowie die wachsende soziale Ungleichheit auch in den entwickelten Industriestaaten. Hinzu kommen öffentlichkeitswirksame Ereignisse wie die Aufnahme Marx’scher Schriften in das Weltdokumentenerbe der UNESCO (2013) und die Jubiläen der „Kapital"-Veröffentlichung (2017) und des 200. Geburtstags von Marx (2018). Vor allem aber wurden durch die Wiederaufnahme der Marx-Engels-Gesamtausgabe (MEGA) seit dem Jahr 1998 zahlreiche neue Texte und Manuskripte für die Forschung zugänglich gemacht. Hierzu zählen naturwissenschaftliche Exzerpte, die Manchester Hefte, sämtliche „Kapital"-Manuskripte, aber auch die erstmals authentische Ausgabe der Manuskripte zur „Deutschen Ideologie" – insgesamt tausende Seiten mit Erstpublikationen, auf deren Grundlage weltweit ein neuer wissenschaftlicher Umgang mit Marx eingesetzt hat.
Die Reihe De Gruyter Marx Forschung soll diese (Neu-)Rezeption bündeln und publiziert Studien, Monographien und Sammelbände, die das Werk und den Nachlass von Marx und Engels in der ganzen Breite, von Philosophie über Ökonomie und Politik bis hin zu naturwissenschaftlichen Aspekten in den Blick nehmen; zugleich finden Quellenstudien (auch ergänzend zur MEGA) hier ihren Ort sowie historische Arbeiten, die zeitgenössische Kontexte aufarbeiten.
Die Herausgeber sind der universitären und der historisch-kritischen Marx-Forschung verbunden:
Prof. (em.) Dr. Andreas Arndt war Inhaber des Lehrstuhls für Philosophie an der Theologischen Fakultät der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin; er ist Ehrenvorsitzender der Internationalen Hegel-Gesellschaft und Mitglied des internationalen wissenschaftlichen Beirats der Marx-Engels-Gesamtausgabe.
Dr. Gerald Hubmann ist Sekretär der Internationalen Marx-Engels-Stiftung (IMES) und Arbeitsstellenleiter der Marx-Engels-Gesamtausgabe (MEGA) an der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften.

In the tradition of the ecological reading of Marx, this book offers a philosophical reflection on the ecological crisis on the basis of Karl Marx's theory of modern, capitalist society. The following questions are pursued:
- What is the nature of the ecological crisis?
- What is the cause or what are the causes of the ecological crisis?
- How can the ecological crisis be solved?
- Can Marxian theory be used to develop a critique and further development of non-Marxian theories that relate to the ecological crisis? And if so, what is the content of this critique and further development?
In order to answer these questions, the theory developed by Marx in 1857/58 in the "Grundrisse" is reconstructed in a textual and systematic manner in the first step. In the second step, theories from economics and natural ethics are presented and placed in an argumentative context with Marx's theory. Due to this interdisciplinary character, the book is not only aimed at philosophers, but also at economists and social scientists as well as people with an interest in environmental protection, sustainability and ecology.
Looking at the state of research on Karl Marx's work, it is immediately apparent that very little attention has been paid to law in particular. This is all the more remarkable given that Marx first came into contact with the socio-political problems of his time as a student of law and only later became closely intertwined with the philosophy of Hegel. Contrary to the mostly systematic considerations of law in Marx's work to date, this work chooses a different approach by reconstructing his legal thinking starting from its roots, Hegel's philosophy of law and its further development by Eduard Gans, and presenting it in its ongoing development. The method of developmental history is not limited to the main writings of the oeuvre, but also includes the peripheral parts of the work.
This is the first comprehensive reconstruction of the history of the development of legal thought, which not only succeeds in documenting the constant relevance of law in Marx's thinking, but also his adherence to Hegel's philosophy of law, including its specific connection between law and freedom.
In developing their materialist notion of history and their critique of ideology, Marx and Engels were especially drawn to Max Stirner’s The Ego and Its Own. This study explores the import of this interconnection by considering the ways that they shared an ideological affinity with the late German Enlightenment of the Vormärz. In addition, Pagel offers a new interpretative decoding of the manuscripts of The German Ideology.
