Carl Schurz (1829-1906), who rose to prominence as a democratic revolutionary in Germany in 1848/49 and made a career in the USA during the Civil War era as an abolitionist and Republican politician, is still celebrated today as an advocate of equality for all humans. This German monograph uses many previously unknown sources to paint a more nuanced picture of his later political activism. Starting in 1870, as a US senator, Schurz opposed civil rights protection for formerly enslaved African Americans in the southern states. From 1877, as US Secretary of the Interior, he initiated harsh forced assimilation policies against Indigenous peoples. The book follows Schurz's departure from the universalism of earlier years. It places his proposals in the larger debate on the proper shape and extent of democracy in the 1870s United States. Although Schurz's proposals anticipated government policies of later decades, his efforts to reduce the rights of African Americans and Indigenous peoples still met with broad resistance.

This volume examines the relationships between innovation and space, illustrating a range of phenomena subsumed in the concept of innovation spaces. It presents new conceptualizations of innovation as a dynamic, territorially unfettered process, and describes alternative forms of proximity and distance in innovation processes, issues that have been largely neglected to date in the discourse on the relationship between innovation and space.

In the 18th century, the power of the imagination, which had previously been regarded as problematic, experienced a radical upsurge in esteem. In the modern era, imagination has been viewed as an essential moment in processes of planning, designing, and organizing the world. The creative capacity to place things in relation to each other in time and space has since been considered a vital force in history.

Why reflect on infrastructures? Today, we are experiencing a breathtaking expansion and intensification of infrastructural interconnections around the globe. At the same time, infrastructures have also become the explicit subject of research studies in the social sciences and humanities. Accordingly, the thesis of this essay is that infrastructures are the instruments and media of Verräumlichung (spatialization).

Regions have played a diverse part in the sovereignty strategies of specific national actors since the early 19th century. Since the end of the Cold War, they have become a preferred frame of reference in responding to current globalization processes – especially in the global South. This monograph introduces the reader to the often-fragmented interdisciplinary knowledge base on topics of regionality, including associated projects.
