Inscriptionum parietariarum Pompeianarum Herculanensium Stabianarum supplementum
CIL IV documents the italic inscriptions in the towns of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Stabiae and Oplontis buried in the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. The new supplement is devoted particularly to the graffiti and dipinti of these towns and includes detailed addenda and corrigenda to the inscriptions already published, numerous new examples discovered since publication of the last supplement, an index and, for the first time, detailed maps.
The second fascicle of the supplement to CIL IV contains extensive addenda and corrigenda on the graffiti and painted writing on the walls of the buildings in the ancient Vesuvius cities, some of which were published in an edition over 100 years ago, as well as an impressive number of recently discovered wall inscriptions.
This volume presents the wall inscriptions carved in Latin and Greek from the Vesuvian towns of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Stabiae, and includes an extensive epigraphic, philological, linguistic, and historical commentary. More than half of these inscriptions had not been edited until now. Antonio Varone is one of the world’s leading experts in the field of Latin epigraphy.
