Das Bayerische Wörterbuch führt – nach den Grundsätzen moderner Lexikographie und auf ungleich größerer Materialbasis – das Bayerische Wörterbuch von Johann Andreas Schmeller fort, das im Verlagsprogramm weiterhin lieferbar ist. Das Bayerische Wörterbuch wird in etwa 100.000 Stichwörtern den heutigen wie den historischen Wortschatz bairischen Mundarten im Freistaat Bayern behandeln. Die Stichwörter stützen sich auf etwa sieben Millionen Belege des Wörterbucharchivs, aus Fragebögen und aus der Literatur. Sie geben Auskunft über die Bedeutungsbreite, Geschichte und räumliche Verbreitung eines Mundartwortes. Gewährsleute aus drei Generationen und dem gesamten Dialektgebiet haben authentische Satzbeispiele zusammengetragen, die den Gebrauch der Wörter im Kontext dokumentieren. Zitate aus älterer und neuerer Literatur – vom althochdeutschen Muspilli des 9. Jahrhunderts bis zu Autoren wie Ludwig Thoma – ergänzen das Bild ebenso wie Redensarten, Scherzverse und Sprichwörter, Kinderspiele, Reime und Rätsel. Der einzelne Stichwort-Artikel wirft Schlaglichter auf das bayerische Alltagsleben: Gegenstände aus Handwerk, Landwirtschaft und Haushalt tauchen darin auf, Arbeitsvorgänge werden beschrieben, Bräuche im Jahres- und Lebenslauf und Vorstellungen des Volksglaubens und der Volksmedizin kurz dargestellt.
