The Biographisches Handbuch der Rabbiner covers Rabbis from central Europe and documents a many-facetted cultural profile. The articles on individual Rabbis are arranged alphabetically and contain as much information as possible on their descent, education, career as a Rabbi, family and religious position. Each entry includes a bibliography covering primary and secondary literature.
The majority of these teachers and scholars had not previously been covered by biographical research. Now, through the Biographisches Handbuch der Rabbiner, it is possible to gain a complete picture of the occupational circumstances of German-speaking Jews in modern times.
- completion of the edition, which is the first publication to give comprehensive access to the biographies and bibliographies of the Jewish Rabbinate in Central Europe between 1781 and 1945
- Part 1 with nearly 2,000 entries covers the Central European region between 1781 and 1871.
- Part 2 lists over 800 rabbis in the German "Reich" between 1871 and 1945.
- Each entry contains a bibliography of primary and secondary sources.

Reviews
"This is the primary resource on the rabbinate in the bulk of central Europe and it is hard to imagine that any work will appear that will replace this handbook. It is critical for any serious study of religious movements among Jews, of the reform movement in Judaism (and orthodoxy), of the modernization of the rabbinate, and for many areas of social and cultural history. It is essential for any library that supports research and study in these areas and no doubt, additional uses will be found."
Religious Studies Review, Valparaiso, No. 4, October 2004
PaRDeS, Potsdam, Nr. 9, Dezember 2004
