Nanophotonics charity issue in support of Ukrainian science
Nanophotonics and the Optica Foundation collaborate to create a grant program to support Ukrainian researchers
Berlin, 24 November 2023
The editorial board of Nanophotonics is pleased to announce the launch of a grant program to support Ukrainian researchers whose lives and work have been impacted by the ongoing war.
In solidarity with the people of Ukraine, Guest Editors Professor Nader Engheta, Professor Nikolay I. Zheludev and Publishing Editor Dennis Couwenberg of the open access journal Nanophotonics organized a special issue titled “Nanophotonics in support of Ukrainian Scientists”. De Gruyter, the Berlin-based co-publisher of the journal along with Science Wise Publishing agreed to donate all article processing charges (APCs) from this issue to the grant program.
Prominent scientists have contributed thirty-three scientific papers to the special issue, covering a diverse range of topics related to the burgeoning discipline of nanophotonics. Together with a donation from one of special issue authors, Sir Michael Berry, Euro 80,375 was raised and will be donated in full.
Through a partnership with the Optica Foundation, an organization that carries out charitable activities in support of the optics and photonics community, researchers and educators based in Ukraine can now apply for a grant ranging from $500 to $2000. Around 100 grants are available with applications open until Thursday 30th November.
This follows the successful Nanophotonics charity issue from 2021 that raised 136,000 EUR for Direct Relief and Gavi – The Vaccine Alliance to support distribution of the COVID vaccine.
Publishing Editor Dennis Couwenberg said: “Science itself is not bound by country borders and is in essence a community effort to advance humanity as a whole. I am grateful to Professor Engetha and Professor Zheludev to organize this charity issue that is enabling the support of a good number of researchers in the Ukraine.”
Carsten Buhr, Managing Director at De Gruyter, added: “We are glad to support this initiative and to be able to make a small contribution. I would like to thank the journal editors and contributing authors for their help in making this special issue a reality.”
