The Institute for German Work in the East made a name for itself in Nazi-occupied Krakow as the center for applied “race and folkdom studies.” This volume is the first to shed light on the careers, biographies, and networks of three researchers trained in Völkerkunde and anthropology, who made their expertise available for both the racist politics of occupation and their own folkist scholarship in Eastern Europe.

Zugleich bietet sie einen luziden Einblick in die Denk- und Arbeitsweise von Forschenden, die im besetzten Polen vermeintlich ideale Bedingungen vorfanden, um ihre Phantasmagorien deutscher Überlegenheit ausleben zu können. Als Instrument diente ihnen hierzu das Handwerkszeug einer methodisch und konzeptionell unausgegorenen Wissenschaft – der Anthropologie und „Völkerkunde“ –, die sie jeweils an der Universität Wien erlernt hatten.“
