The Gothic kingdom in Italy stood at the interface between ancient times and the Middle Ages. While it largely continued the traditions of Roman statehood, it was also based on a fragile compromise between indigenous elites and a warrior elite that had come to the land with Theodoric. The volume compiles innovative essays from diverse disciplines on central aspects of this singular power structure.
