One of the privileged cultural sites for the formation of a new image of womanhood in the early modern period is lyric poetry. A decisive role in this process was played by the reception of the myths surrounding the ancient goddess of love, Aphrodite/Venus. This imagery provided a major impetus for the revaluation of the female. This book sheds new light on these interrelations through an analysis of French and Spanish love poetry.
