About this book
What is a hero in narrative texts? This volume explores this question by considering the basic logics of distinction: What distinctions does a text draw between the hero and “the others”? By investigating primarily premodern texts, the chapters in this volume examine the fraught coexistence of “radical otherness” and exemplarity in relation to “problematic saviors,” in whom this contradiction comes to a head.
