Abstract
This introductory chapter discusses the theme of this book, which is about the career and works of Laudian and royalist polemicist Peter Heylyn in seventeenth-century England. The book analyses the work of Heylyn in order to better understand the ideology of Laudianism and Laudian thought. Unlike the works of most of those who wrote in support of Laudian policies, Heylyn's writings were in several cases directly commissioned by the king and were published by authority. His sustained productivity and his consistent high profile provide us with a unique glimpse of a fully contextualized Laudian career, where his defence of Laudianism in the 1630s can be compared with both earlier and later writings.
