England’s military heartland
This chapter is in the book England’s military heartland

Abstract

This final chapter begins by introducing the idea that the military have been forced to accept collaborative management of the land, by virtue of its value in terms of heritage, access, agriculture and ecology. Beginning with a discussion of Operation Nightingale, a successful archaeological project which trains veterans to be involved in the prehistory of the Plain as a way of recovering from trauma, it returns to the ecological questions in Chapter 1, looking at how the Plain is used, or shared, today, including for training Ukrainian soldiers in a new geopolitical scenario. We speak to a farmer who has long experience of working the land alongside the army, and return to the subject of public access, whether on foot or wheels. The chapter discusses how local residents feel about possible dangers emanating from military use.
