Two Intergenerational solidarity in families: interplay between the family and the state

und
Abstract
The chapter concentrates on the debate over the interplay between the state and the family as support providers and their effect on intergenerational solidarity. The main objective of the article is to discuss whether the welfare state will crowd-in or crowd-out the family support, by taking into account different dimensions of intergenerational solidarity: functional, affective and associative. The chapter highlights the pattern of familial solidarity between generations and how it is embedded into the societal and cultural context, by describing the division of care obligations between the state and the family in different welfare systems, such as familialistic, defamilialised and re-familialised. Moreover, the changes of intergenerational solidarity in post-communist countries are discussed by declaring that a rapidly changing social security system accompanied by demographic changes will challenge the private support network and will impact intergenerational relations.
