Abstract

Microscopical examination methods on different length scales are an indispensable tool for characterizing the supermolecular structure or phase morphology of polymer materials. It is specifically for modified polymer materials that they provide a multitude of information on the impact which modifying components such as fillers, additives or polymer mixing components in polymer composites and blends have on the supermolecular structure, interaction between components, size and distribution of particulate matter, and the effect of technological conditions in generating or processing blends and composites and, in particular, even partially crystalline polymer materials. Actually, large significance is imparted here to the polymer nanocomposites because they are a subject of extensive research work for all polymer material groups. Using selected examples, i.e. for partially crystalline, nanostructured thermoplastics, filled elastomers, and nanoparticle-modified, thermoplastic and elastomeric, heterogeneous polymer blends, this paper demonstrates the efficiency of various microscopical examination methods.
