Abstract

Soiling degree and cleanability of different polyester textile materials before and after impregnation with a soil release polymer (SRP) has been systematically investigated. The use of an imaging instrument for the optical roughness analysis operating on the principle of chromatic aberration allowed visualisation of a transparent SRP film on impregnated textile surfaces. Through visualisation of the SRP film and quantification of its relative area, a possible mechanism of cleanability due to impregnation with SRP is proposed.

M. Sc. Alfredo Calvimontes was born in 1965 and graduate from the La Salle University (Mexico), Faculty of Chemical Engineering in 1989. During twelve years he worked as a manufacturing engineer in the chemical and textile industries in Mexico and Bolivia. In 2004 he received his Master Degree in Textile and Clothing Engineering from the Dresden University of Technology.

Dr. Victoria Dutschk was born in 1966 and graduate from the Odessa State University, Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics in 1988. She obtained her PhD in 2000 at the Dresden University of Technology, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Department Material Science (under Prof. W. Pompe). Since 1994 she has been working as a research associate at the Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research Dresden in the field of interfacial phenomena.

Dr. Herbert Koch was born in 1963 and studied Chemistry from 1983 to 1989 at the University of Bonn. He received his PhD in 1992 with a dissertation in the field of supra-molecular chemistry. Since joining former Hüls AG in 1992 he worked in a variety of fields relating to the development of speciality chemicals. In his current position within Sasol Germany he is in charge of development and technical customer service for speciality polymers going into the detergent and cleaning industry.

Prof. Dr. Brigitte Voit was born 1963 in Bayreuth, studied Chemistry from 1982 to 1987 at the University Bayreuth and received her PhD at the same University 1990 under the guidance of Prof. Oskar Nuyken with her work on ‘Water-soluble Photo Resins’. After a postdoctoral work at Eastman Kodak in Rochester, USA, on hyper-branched polyesters, she finalised her habilitation on ‘Dendritic Polymers’ at the Technische Universität München in 1996. She took over the chair of Organic Chemistry of Polymers at the Technische Universität Dresden in August 1997 together with the leadership of the IPF Institute on Macromolecular Chemistry at the Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research (IPF). In September 2002 she was appointed as Managing Director and Chief Scientific Officer of the IPF Dresden.
