Johnston (1931-2006) was an emeritus professor of law, emeritus chair in Asia-Pacific Legal Relations and senior and research fellow, Centre in Asia-Pacific Relations at the University of Victoria; adjunct professor of law at Dalhousie University, and codirector of the Southeast Asian Programme in Ocean Law, Policy and Management (SEAPOL) in Bangkok, Thailand
