PROFESSOR LEONID I STRAKHOVSKY was born and educated in Russia, attending the University of Petrograd and later receiving the degree of Doctor Historical Sciences from Louvain University. During the years covered by this book, he served in the Imperial Russian Army, the French Foreign Legion in North Russia, and the North Russian Army. He has been honoured by four European countries for his work in the field of European history and has published several previous books, including The Origins of American Intervention in North Russia, 1918; Intervention at Archangel; and Alexander I of Russia. Since coming to North America he has been on the faculties of Georgetown University, University of Maryland, and Harvard University. In 1950 he came to the University of Toronto as visiting professor in the Department of Slavic Studies and since 1953 has been Associate Professor in that department. He is now a Canadian citizen.
