Room temperature X-ray crystal structure analysis of a twinned crystal of high-Tc superconducting YBa2Cu3O7−x(0 ≤ x ≤ 0.10)
Abstract
An X-ray crystal structure analysis of a twinned crystal of the high-Tc superconductor YBa2Cu3O7−x (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.10) was performed. The investigated sample crystallizes orthorhombically in the space group Pmmm with a = 3.843(1), b = 3.881(1) and c = 11.673(2) Å. The observed intensities are explained by two models, which are differentiated by the occupancy of two oxygen positions: (a) a pseudomerohedric twin model (twin plane (110)) with oxygen in the site 1e, an occupancy factor SOF = 0.94(6) and a volume ratio of twins of 1:0.45(5), yielding the composition YBa2Cu3O6.84(8); and (b) statistically distributed oxygen atoms in the sites 1b and 1e and the overall composition YBa2Cu3O7.03(16). In the latter case the differences to tetragonal symmetry are only manifested in the nonequivalent Uij of the two oxygen atoms. Due to the splitting of intensities and considering neutron diffraction results, we conclude to deal with a twin.
