Abstract

One of the most important food products in Old Russia were products of cereal grains. These findings are not only the result of archaeological research but of careful philological analysis of Old Russian (respectively Middle Russian) corpus sources. The present article gives an insight into the Old Russian food culture by analyzing following words, which describe products of cereal grains in Old Russian belonging to the semantic field “CHLEB”: борошьно, толокъно, опрѣснъкъ, хлѣбъ, колачь, короваи, пирогъ. Upon the basis of the historical, lexicological and ethnographical data, some semantic features of the mentioned lexemes were examined and designated.
