Abstract

The present article deals with various lexical elements which are used for the realization of the concept of a person in a leadership position in some South Slavonic languages. It is shown that the formation of terms referring to a man in a leadership position in Serbian, Croatian, Slovene, and Bulgarian is often based on special corresponding ideas or rather patterns such as the following: (1) derivatives of verbs with the meaning ‘to lead, to run’, including terms with the Common Slavic root *ved- or *vod-; (2) the idea ‘situated at the front’ (or ‘the first’); (3) the idea ‘situated on top’; (4) terms based on French “commandeur” or “commandant”; (5) ‘to order, to command, to rule’; (6) the lexical field ‘ruler, master’; (7) terms with the roots vlad- and vlast’- and the idea of ‘power’; (8) the idea of ‘size’. Attention is paid here to both terms based on genuine Slavic linguistic material and to loan words, using examples from the languages mentioned above.
