Abstract

Communication via the internet has produced a phenomenon that is of huge interest not only to cultural sociologists but also to those engaged in the academic study of folklore and literature: it is known as internet-lore or web folklore. Taking the currently circulating illustrated tale of Medved the Bear as an example, this paper examines the emergence and dissemination of web folklore in the Russian internet. In a multi-layered process of reception, traditional fairy-tale motifs, jokes and media-generated myths are mingled with urban legends, chain letters, email-borne rumors or hoaxes and meander through forums, websites and blogs on the worldwide web. In the process they undergo (re)folklorization and a parodic literarization. The hybrid status of this massive “grass roots” production of creative texts, which flit between written, oral and pictorial traditions, predestine them also to become literature′s narrative feedstock.
