Summary

Trigonal sodium uranyl carbonate, Na4[UO2 (CO3)3], has been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions, and its incorporation of IO3, IO4, SeO32−, and SeO42− has been investigated. LA-ICP-MS was used to detect the presence and concentration of iodine, selenium, and uranium in single crystals of Na4[UO2(CO3)3], and these in-situ analyses indicate that IO3, IO4, SeO32−, and SeO42− have been incorporated into its structure. The proposed mechanisms are the substitution of IO3, IO4, SeO32−, and SeO42− for CO32−. The incorporation of iodine oxoanions results in the loss of Na+ cations so as to maintain charge balance; the substitution schemes may be expressed as follows:□+IO3 ↔Na+ + CO32− and □+IO4 ↔Na+ +CO32− (□ = vacancy).
