Summary

Cumulative chain yields for masses 83, 84, 97, 99, 129, 132, 143 and 145 are reported for fission induced in thorium-232 by 3 MeV neutrons. Yields for 14.7 MeV neutron induced fission for the same masses except 132 and 143 but including 131 were also measured. At each initial excitation energy the number of secondary neutrons emitted by several pairs of complementary fragments was calculated; values from 2.3 to 2.4 (at 3 MeV) and 3.6 to 4.0 (at 14 MeV) in good agreement with average published values were obtained. An assessment of the positions of the light and heavy peak maxima suggests that the latter shifts more than the former towards lower masses with increase in initial excitation energy. Implications of this result are discussed.
