Redaction patterns in biblical wisdom literature in light of the instructions of Shuruppak

Abstract
This paper examines redactional theories regarding the development of the Book of Proverbs from a comparative perspective. Building on the methodology known as Empirical Models for Biblical Criticism, the paper explores patterns of development and redaction in the Mesopotamian proverb collection The Instructions of Shuruppak, including growth of collections, editorial use of opening and concluding formulas, and religiously-oriented redaction. These, in turn, serve as an illustration for very similar processes hypothesized by Biblicists regarding the development of biblical wisdom collections.
Zusammenfassung
Der Artikel beleuchtet im Sinne der »Empirical Models for Biblical Criticism« redaktionsgeschichtliche Modelle zur Entstehung des Proverbienbuches anhand eines Vergleichs mit derjenigen der sumerischen Sprichwortsammlung »Anweisungen von Shuruppak«. Dabei werden das Wachstum von Sammlungen, die redaktionelle Verwendung von Anfangs- und Schlussformeln sowie die religiös-orientierte Textbearbeitung thematisiert.
Résumé
Cet article éclaire les modèles rédactionnels du développement du Livre des Proverbes dans une perspective comparatiste. S’appuyant sur les « modèles empiriques de la critique biblique », l’auteur explore la genèse du Livre des Proverbes par une comparaison avec celle du recueil sumérien de proverbes « Instructions de Shuruppak » en abordant la croissance des collections, l’utilisation éditoriale des formules d’ouverture et de clôture, ainsi que l’édition de textes à orientation religieuse. Cette analyse sert d’illustration à des processus très similaires supposés par les biblistes concernant le développement de collections de sagesse biblique.
