This is a major textbook in the Danish language, understood and read in all five Nordic countries with almost 30 million inhabitants, edited by three internationally well-known pain scientists and pain clinicians. There are seven main sections with chapters dealing with all significant areas and issues in pain-physiology and pain mechanisms in acute, chronic, cancer-related, in cancer-survivors, in children and in the elderly, covering pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment approaches, and organisation of pain management.

Each chapter is written in precise style, well-illustrated, often enhancing the clinical picture by describing patient-cases, their presentation, diagnosis, management, and outcome. Mostly the level of knowledge is up-to-date, e.g. they cover well the recent focus on negative cognitive and respiratory effects of the gabapentinoids, especially when combined with opioids. On the other hand they have missed the recent well-documented central mechanisms of the prodrug paracetamol, and surprisingly there is no information on the major tramadol misuse/abuse problems being revealed in several countries. This is particularly noticeable as in Denmark physicians are still prescribing tramadol about 10 times as often as in the other Nordic countries.

This text-book is highly recommendable for students and practitioners at all sites and levels of pain-patient care.
