Michael Eckardt (b. 1974) is a lecturer extraordinary at Stellenbosch University 〈michael.eckardt@web.de〉. His research interests include media and communication history. His publications include “Film criticism in Cape Town 1928–1930” (2005); “Zwischenspiele der Filmgeschichte: Zur Rezeption des Kinos der Weimarer Republik in Südafrika 1928–1933” (2008); “The Bauhaus walk: On the trail of early Bauhaus in Weimar. Weimar” (2010); and “Brown-red shadows: The influence of Third Reich and Soviet cinema on Afrikaans film, 1927–1948” (with K. G. Tomaselli, 2011).
Abstract
The logician and philosopher Georg Klaus (1912–1974) used to be the sole pioneer in establishing semiotics in former East Germany, becoming a forerunner for its later broad acceptance within disciplines like philosophy, cybernetics, linguistics, aesthetics, etc. On the occasion of Georg Klaus's 100th birthday in 2012, the article describes the importance of his semiotic writings within the broader context of his works and discusses its influence on the development of semiotics in Germany.
