Fragment of a Roman Period jug handle from Vanovice, Blansko District (Moravia, Czech Republic) – interpretation possibilities

Abstract
A remarkable discovery was made in Vanovice (Moravia, Czech Republic): a fragment of a Roman bronze jug handle from the 1st century AD. The find is stored in the Museum of Boskovice region under the inv. no. A50476. The workmanship of the bronze handle attachment far exceeds the typical finds from the region of Moravia. The design of the handle attachment is connected to the Hellenistic toreutic tradition. The head depicted on the handle is believed to be that of Dionysus or Silenus, as determined through iconographic analysis and comparison with other works from Roman sculpture (mostly double herms) and artistic craftwork. The context of this find raises many intriguing questions. The artefact was found on the periphery of a barbarian settlement from the Roman Period. The main characteristic of the site is the hilly landscape without any settlement or funerary activities from the Roman Period. Could this be an isolated find, or does it indicate evidence of ritual practices during the Roman Period in the Barbaricum?
Zusammenfassung
In Vanovice (Mähren, Tschechische Republik) wurde ein bemerkenswerter Fund gemacht: ein Fragment des Bronzegriffs eines römischen Kruges aus dem 1. Jahrhundert n. Chr. Der Fund wird im Museum der Region von Boskovice aufbewahrt (Inv.-Nr. A50476). Die handwerkliche Ausführung der bronzenen Henkelattasche geht über typische Funde aus Mähren hinaus. Der Stil der Ausführung des Henkels knüpft an die hellenistische toreutische Tradition an. Es kann davon ausgegangen werden, dass es sich bei dem auf der Henkelattasche abgebildeten Kopf um den des Dionysos oder Silen handelt, was durch die ikonografische Analyse und den Vergleich mit anderen Werken der römischen Bildhauerei (zumeist Doppelhermen) nachgewiesen werden konnte. Der Kontext dieses Fundes wirft eine Reihe von Fragen auf. Das Artefakt wurde außerhalb einer Siedlung aus der römischen Kaiserzeit gefunden. Das Hauptmerkmal des Fundortes ist eine hügelige Landschaft ohne Siedlungs- oder Bestattungsaktivitäten während der römischen Kaiserzeit. Könnte es sich hierbei um einen Einzelfund handeln, oder liefert der Fundort vielleicht Belege für die rituellen Praktiken der römischen Kaiserzeit im Barbaricum?

Ve Vanovicích (Morava, Česká republika) byl učiněn pozoruhodný nález: fragment bronzového držadla římského džbánu z 1. století n. l. Nález je uložen v Muzeu regionu Boskovicka (inv. č. A50476). Řemeslné zpracování báze bronzové rukojeti přesahuje svým provedením typické nálezy z moravského regionu. Styl zpracování rukojeti navazuje na helénistické toreutické tradice. Lze se domnívat, že hlava zobrazená na rukojeti je Dionýsova nebo Silenova, jak bylo zjištěno ikonografickou analýzou a porovnáním s jinými díly římské plastiky (většinou dvojitými hermovkami). Kontext tohoto nálezu vyvolává celou řadu otázek. Artefakt byl nalezen mimo sídliště z doby římské. Hlavní charakteristikou lokality je kopcovitá krajina bez jakýchkoli sídlištních či pohřebních aktivit z doby římské. Může se jednat o ojedinělý nález, nebo svědčí lokalizace o dokladech rituálních praktik v době římské v barbariku?
