Abstract
Polymer production and use is an enormous industrial concern, with a few commodity polymers constituting a large portion of the market. The degradation of these traditional polymers is extraordinarily slow, and thus a large effort has been made to produce biodegradable polymers on an industrial scale. A survey of the advantages and challenges of such novel materials are presented.
