Abstract

The Word of God is the ground from which hope springs, and at the same time its object. Christian hope, based on the Gospel, differs from natural hope, characteristic of human life. It goes deeper, believing that the living God is the source of life. The creational Word of God is understood as the Word that creates righteousness. This Word, in its twofold form of law and gospel, mediates the communion of God and humankind through the last judgement and beyond. According to Luther, the hope of eternal life then means entering into the realm of the Word. This object of hope (spes quae speratur ) is reflected in the movement of hope (spes qua speratur ), expressed in the acts of beginning, waiting patiently, letting go and especially in the act of praying.
