„Geld macht den Mann“: Reichtum als Distinktionsmerkmal antiker Eliten

Zusammenfassung

Der Beitrag ordnet Herodots Erzählung von der fürstlichen Belohnung des Atheners Alkmeon durch den Lyderkönig Kroisos in die allgemeine Debatte über die Konstitution der griechischen Eliten in archaischer Zeit ein. Dabei steht die Frage nach den materiellen Ressourcen im Vordergrund, die als Basis des distinktiven exklusiven Lebensstils Gegenstand einer intensiven Konkurrenz zwischen den Aristokraten waren. Dieser Wettbewerb produzierte notwendig Gewinner und Verlierer. Sozialer Aufstieg bzw. Abstieg führten zu einer erheblichen Instabilität der Zusammensetzung der Gruppe an der Spitze der gesellschaftlichen Pyramide.

Summary

This paper puts Herodotus’ story of the lavish reward for the Athenian Alcmaeon by Croesus, king of Lydia, into the context of the general debate on the constitution of Greek elites in the archaic age. In concrete terms, the question of material resources, which were the basis of the distinctive and exclusive lifestyle and the object of an intense competition among aristocrats is to be given priority. It was this competition which necessarily produced winners and losers. Social advancement on the one hand and fall in status on the other hand led to a high degree of instability with respect to the composition of the group at the top of the social ladder.
