Abstract
The synthesis of pure elemental boron has been elusive for over two centuries. The recent understanding of magnesium boride as a superconductor at 39 K has brought about the need for understanding the causes of the difficulty in preparing elemental boron and magnesium boride therefrom. This review article discusses some of the reasons for the difficulties in the chemical synthesis as well as the physics involved in these. Some of the hypothesis outlined in this paper may shed light into better synthetic methods.
