Computer science in humanities

  • Manfred Thaller

    Prof. em. Dr. Manfred Thaller studied Modern History at the University of Graz, Austria, and Sociology at the Institute fpr Advanced Studies Vienna. He worked from 1978–1997 at the Max-Planck-Institute for History in Göttingen, Germany, on a generalized approach for the application of information technology towards historical research, operationalized by a non-relational DBMS, κλειω. At the University of Bergen, Norway, he served afterwards as Prof. of Humanities Computer Science and founding director of the Humanities Information Technology Centre. Since 2000 he has been professor of “Historisch-Kulturwissenschaftliche Informationsverarbeitung” at the University at Cologne, Germany, where he retired in 2015. During that time, most of his research was focused on digital libraries and digital preservation.
