An increasingly more differentiated approach is taken to operative repair of inguinal hernia on the basis of the findings and patient-related influencing factors. In inguinal hernia surgery, this is known as a “tailored approach.” The outcome criteria used in inguinal hernia surgery are perioperative complication rates, recurrence rates, and chronic pain rates. For each outcome criterion, numerous influencing factors can be identified. It is advisable to view the outcome criteria independently of each other and to define their associated influencing variables separately, in order to better identify how the various factors affect the respective outcome.

Accordingly, in the following publications, you will find systematic reviews of the risk factors for perioperative complications [1], recurrences [2], and chronic pain [3]. In addition to these publications, there is a special review of registry-based findings for inguinal hernia surgery. In recent years, registry-based data have made important contributions to improving inguinal hernia surgery. The most important findings are presented in this article [4]. The lists of references given for the various publications highlight the relevant sources for the specific topic. Hence, these articles give a well-founded overview of the current state of knowledge in science for the different topics. For the practice domain, there are several evidence-based insights for optimization of hernia surgery. As such, all contributions are of scientific and practical interest.

The authors hope that these articles will provide you, the reader, with inspiration for your clinical activities.
