Wagner Anne is a research associate professor at Lille University (France), she has a Ph.D. in Jurilinguistics (1999), and Habilitation in Private Law (2015) from Lille University. She has received the National Research Award (Rank A) for her research career. Her main research interests include legal semiotics, visual studies, language and law, legal culture and heritage, legal translation, legal terminology, law and the Humanities, and legal discourse studies. She is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal for the Semiotics of Law (Springer), Series Co-Editor of Law, Language and Communication (Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group), Series Co-Editor of Law and Visual Jurisprudence (Springer), Vice-President of the Multicultural Association of Law and Language, and President of the International Roundtables for the Semiotics of Law. She has guest edited Special Issues with the International Journal for the Semiotics of Law, Social Semiotics, and Semiotica on legal translation, and legal interpretation. Aleksandra Matulewska graduated from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Poland, Faculty of Modern Languages and Literature, (MA in linguistics and information science in 2000, PhD in general linguistics in 2005, doctor habilitated in applied linguistics in 2014). She is a translator, a member of the Association of Polish Translators and Interpreters (STP) and an expert member of the Polish Society of Sworn and Specialized Translators TEPIS. She has been teaching legal translation and interpreting since 2003 at the graduate and postgraduate studies. She has lectured at workshops organized by the Translation Unit of the European Parliament in Luxemburg, STP and TEPIS in Warsaw. So far, she has published 4 monographs on legal translation, one coursebook and over 80 papers on specialized translation. She has also participated in over 100 conferences and workshops delivering speeches. Her main research interests include legal semiotics, language and law, legal and hunting culture and their heritage, legal translation, legal terminology, languages for special purposes.

Le Cheng is Professor of Legal Discourse and Translation and Professor of Law at Zhejiang University. He is Editor-in-Chief of International Journal of Legal Discourse (De Gruyter), and Editor of International Journal for the Semiotics of Law (Springer). Abstract

The aim of the paper is to discuss legal language systems as culturally constituted sign-systems that are continuously evolving in time and space. To understand messages formulated in legal languages, one needs to realize that law is culture-bound, which in turn means that law reflects society’s mentality, tolerance, knowledge, social perceptions, etc. At the same time, law is a living reality impacted by various global phenomena and other legal systems. Therefore, this legal reality has “divergent potentialities” (Hasegawa, Ko. 2016. “A glance at the dynamics of ‘confluence’ in a legal system – notes on H. Patrick Glenn’s insights concerning Legal Traditions of the World”. In Transnational Legal Theory. Vol. 7/1: 1–8, 3), which enable it to develop in various directions depending on wider social, political and technological contexts. Additionally, when communicating law interlingually and intralingually, one needs to take into account the knowledge of senders and recipients since the degree of commensurability of law depends on the uniformity of interpretation on meanings. When discussing the issues of sign meaning interpretation, the authors will focus on non-decomposable units and fuzzy units. The meaning of such terms is subject to interpretation through the prism of tacit knowledge. Therefore, the interpretation of any culturally constituted sign-system is burdened with some loss of information and meaning deficiency.
