Abstract
We show that the sporadic simple group M(22), the exceptional group of Lie type 2E6(2) and their automorphism groups are uniquely determined by the approximate structure of the centralizer of an element of order 3 together with some information about the fusion of this element in the group.
The initial work on this paper was prepared during a visit of the first and third author to the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach as part of the Research in Pairs Programme, 30 November–12 December, 2009. The authors are pleased to thank the MFO and its staff for the pleasant and stimulating research environment that they provided. The first author is also grateful to the DFG for support and the mathematics department in Halle for their hospitality.
Both authors also like to thank the referees for their careful reading of the manuscript and the suggestions, which lead to improvements of the final paper.
