Gareth Davies is Associate Professor of American History at Oxford University. He has published on the social policies and political crisis of the United States during the 1960s, and on the growing role of the federal government in education politics. He is currently writing a book about the evolution of disaster politics in the United States, from the early republic to Hurricane Katrina.
Abstract
Martha Derthick, one of the nation’s foremost scholars of federalism and public administration, died on January 12. Gareth Davies, one of her former students, reflects here on her intellectual legacy, especially as reflected in her publications, but also, more briefly, on her approach to mentoring.
