Abstract

In his study Morphology of the Folktale Vladimir Propp comes to the conclusion that in Russian tales of magic the action prevails over the characters: the structure of the action remains constant whereas the characters are interchangeable. Propp divides the action into a stable sequence of recurring functions. Thus all tales of magic are made up of an identical narrative scheme. These results can also be related to other forms of folklore. The present contribution is an attempt at applying the Proppian concept to the merry tales of the Ulenspiegel of 1515 where play on words is a central device.
