The NPU terminology, jointly owned by IFCC and IUPAC, is the basis for structured communication of clinical laboratory information in several national and international organizations. It needs to develop continuously, consistent with development in the clinical laboratory sciences, in order to support this function.

In 2004 the first publication on properties examined in clinical molecular biology was published as part of the IFCC-IUPAC series on properties and units in the clinical laboratory sciences: Part XVIII. Properties and units in clinical molecular biology (IUPAC Technical Report) PAC 2004, Vol. 76, No. 9, pp. 1799–1807, dx.doi.org/10.1351/pac200476091799.

Since then, medical molecular biology has developed rapidly, and many new kinds of properties not treated in the 2004 publication are routinely estimated today. The project intends to develop semantic models for structured definitions of these new kinds of properties, and demonstrate their validity by examples.

Clinical laboratories, users of health care records, and other users of laboratory data in several countries depend on the NPU terminology to support structured communication and storage of clinical laboratory data. Updated semantic models are needed in order to continue the development of the NPU terminology and reflect changes in the clinical laboratory sciences. The product of this project will be an IUPAC technical report supplementing the 2004 publication, and enabling the NPU terminology to support modern clinical molecular biology.
