Laser World of Photonics in Germany and in China
The Laser – World of Photonics in Munich, Germany, has established itself as the world’s most important trade show for laser and photonics technology. The organizers of the show have carefully extended the brand in several different directions. On the one hand, they adopted new fields of development, such as quantum technology. After a good debut in 2022, the World of Quantum will be continued in 2023. Then, the World of Photonics Congress will return, too. Hopefully, we will see then a return to the bi-annual schedule of the laser.
On the other hand, organizer Messe München established a related trade show on what has become the World’s biggest market for industrial laser technology – China. While the Laser World of Photonics China has been very successful in recent years, it has also been hit hard by the global pandemic. After an attempt to move this year’s show to July, the LWoP China has been postponed to March 2023. As with all other in-person meetings, it remains to be seen if the pandemic returns with all its limitations or if the organizers have a chance to re-establish their success story in China. Opposite to the German LWoP, the Chinese version is an annual event.
World of Quantum to be continued
World of QUANTUM, an event that provided the international quantum community with its very own platform for the first time, was held on the Messe München fairgrounds as part of this year’s LASER World of PHOTONICS 2022. The premiere received such a good reception that the organizers are planning to continue the event in 2023. Next year, this unique event will also be held in conjunction with the World of Photonics Congress, a separate gathering that will also delve deeply into the topic of quantum technology.
“We are really happy about the great reception that the World of QUANTUM received from trade fair visitors,” says Dr. Reinhard Pfeiffer, the Deputy CEO of Messe München. “In deciding to organize this event, we acted in much the same way that we did in 1973 when we developed the LASER World of PHOTONICS and organized an event for a technology whose future is, at the very least, just as bright.” Quantum technology is based largely on photonics because many quantum solutions grow out of it. “The concept of the World of QUANTUM paid off for everybody,” says Exhibitor Director Anke Odouli. “The industry welcomed the new platform with open arms. The event was designed in particular with networking in mind and provided guests with lots of time to talk about technology, make contacts and learn about the very latest developments in quantum research”.
A concept for the future
The World of QUANTUM is the world’s largest platform where the scientific community, industry and users can come together and explore quantum technology, learn about the latest research findings and present the first application examples of the promising future technology. A survey conducted during the LASER World of PHOTONICS found that more than 60 percent of all trade fair participants visited the World of QUANTUM. Among these visitors, more than 90 percent expressed their enthusiasm for the program offered by this new event. Eighty-two percent of the exhibitors at the World of QUANTUM said they would participate in the event once again.
Michael Förtsch, the CEO of the exhibitor Q.ANT, said: “The concept of the World of QUANTUM offered the perfect format for the state of quantum technology today: a mix of companies, start-ups, forums, poster sessions and networking, all linked to the LASER World of PHOTONICS. The right contact partners came together here. It served as the ideal platform for presentations of our innovative products based on quantum technology and for discussions with potential customers about fields of application”.
The hall layout provided exhibitors, who ranged from global players to research associations and start-ups, with a range of different formats that they could use to present their innovations. The event also included a program of presentations in which experts explored the broad spectrum of quantum-technology applications. As part of the event, teams of talented young researchers were able to try out quantum-computer programming during the Qiskit Hackathon, organized in cooperation with IBM Quantum and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
Quantum conference extends trade show in 2023
In 2023, the World of Photonics Congress will be held in conjunction with the World of QUANTUM and serve as a platform for wide-ranging discussions: The largest conference, the CLEO/Europe-EQEC, will organize its own series of events, the European Quantum Electronics Conferences. These conferences will provide experts with an opportunity to delve into fundamental quantum-technology research.
The next World of QUANTUM will be held together with LASER World of PHOTONICS at the Messe München exhibition center from June 27–30, 2023, and the next World of Photonics Congress from June 25–30, 2023.

Laser world of photonics China postponed to March 2023
In 2022, the global pandemic caused widespread lockdown measures in China. Under these circumstances it became impossible to hold the trade show at its regular date in March. Currently, it is postponed to March 2023. This interrupts a remarkable success story.

Before the spread of the pandemic, LWoP China has been coming close to the German trade show in Munich. There, the organizer Messe München counted 1293 exhibitors in 2019. In China, the trade show was retained in 2020 and 2021, although with limited participation from other countries. The same happened at the LWoP 2022 in Munich, when only a few Asian visitors had a chance to attend the trade fair in Munich. It remains to be seen if or when the regional events in Munich and Shanghai can attract a more international audience again.

Preview: EuroBlech 2022
The bi-annual trade show EuroBlech is the largest trade exhibition for the sheet metal working industry including all kinds of laser material processing. As another victim of the pandemic, EuroBlech 2020 had to be canceled. In 2018, the trade fair attracted 1507 exhibitors and 56,307 visitors from 105 countries.
The 26th edition of EuroBlech 2022, will take place from 25–28 October 2022 in Hanover, Germany. Following the latest easing of Covid restrictions, show organiser Mack-Brooks Exhibitions has confirmed that this year’s EuroBlech will go ahead as planned. Demand for stand space has surged, and the current exhibitor list stands at 1257 companies from 39 nations, covering a total net exhibition space of over 88,000 square metres. For the first time, EuroBlech will feature a ninth exhibition hall focusing on joining technology, one of the significant growth markets in the e-mobility and general industrial sectors.
After a compulsory break, EuroBlech 2022 marks the long-awaited comeback of face-to-face marketing and personal business meetings. Starting this October, the show will also resume its usual biennial event cycle.
“There is a genuine sense of relief and excitement within the industry – it’s been four years since our last live show so EuroBlech 2022 is widely perceived as a much-needed technological update for the entire sheet metal processing sector”, says Evelyn Warwick, Event Director of EuroBlech, on behalf of the organiser Mack-Brooks Exhibitions. “EuroBlech has always been the industry’s key marketplace where everything and everyone comes together, and this year’s edition provides a particularly important booster to kick-start or renew business growth”.
Nine exhibition halls to promote technological excellence
EuroBlech 2022 will be occupying halls 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 26 and 27 at the Hanover Exhibition Grounds, the world’s largest exhibition centre. The newly added hall 26 will focus on joining technology and also host exhibitors of surface and tool technology who had previously been located in hall 13.
Exhibits cover the entire sheet metal working technology chain in the manufacturing of metal prototypes, industrial components and consumer parts. This includes machines, tools and IT solutions for cutting, punching and forming, joining, welding and fastening, surface treatment and finishing, process control and quality assurance, machine elements and components, CAD/CAM/CIM systems, warehouse and factory equipment, material recycling, and other solutions to process metal sheet, tubes, profiles, plastic hybrids and other structures.
EuroBlech exhibitors come from around the globe and range from innovative start-ups and SMEs to big internationals. This year’s top exhibiting countries are Germany, Italy, Turkey, Switzerland, China, the Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, Poland and France.
Engaging live exhibits and technological world premieres
As always, visitors can expect an impressive amount of live machine demonstrations and technological world premieres. There will be plenty of opportunities to watch innovative machinery in action, allowing attendees to assess and discuss potential benefits for their own production process.
“We are really looking forward to the buzz and excitement on the show floor”, says Evelyn Warwick. “In the end, nothing beats human interaction: A face-to-face conversation, a live demonstration, a fist bump – all this is important to establish good relationships and build trust. We are delighted that EuroBlech will once again provide a physical platform where tech buyers can meet and connect with world-leading suppliers and innovators in the industry”.
Substantial need to invest in emerging technologies
Traditionally, EuroBlech attracts a high percentage of visitors with decision-making and buying capacity. For 2022, tech budgets are expected to rise as companies begin to revive their plans to invest in emerging technology for a future-proof business.
“There is a substantial need for manufacturers to align themselves to the complex and fluctuating demands of modern markets” explains Evelyn Warwick. “Many of our visitors will be looking for automated, digital and scalable solutions to facilitate the cost-efficient and sustainable production of industrial components and consumer parts. At EuroBlech, they enjoy direct access to a broad spectrum of tech suppliers. This will allow them to explore and invest in the best tools, machines and materials for all their sheet metal processing needs”.
Attracting top industry professionals from all key industry sectors
The previous EuroBlech 2018 attracted a total of 56,301 international trade visitors, including buyers, design engineers, production and quality managers, researchers and other technical experts from all management levels and business types.
Visitors come from all key industry sectors, including manufacturers of sheet metal parts, components and assemblies; ferrous and non-ferrous metal production and construction; automotive, aerospace and shipbuilding; mechanical engineering; building and construction; heating, ventilation and air conditioning; renewable energy construction; consumer electronics; telecommunication; precision, optics and medical equipment; food and packaging; and many more.

EOSAM 2022 in Porto
On 12–16 September the European Optical Society Annual Meeting EOSAM will take place in Porto, Portugal, with over 300 presentations on optics and photonics with an industrial exhibition. EOSAM 2022 will include a week of novel research results from a wide range of topics under 13 topical meetings under the sun of Porto, 12-16 September 2022.
Before the official opening of the conference on Tuesday 13 September, we offer eight free-of-charge tutorials on several topics for the registered conference attendees on Monday 12 September. Over 300 presentations will take over the stage for the week, together with poster sessions, and many networking opportunities; welcome reception, conference dinner, lunches, etc. all included in the registration fees.
EOSAM this year will include a very special collaboration between the EOS and EPIC- The European Photonics Industry Consortium, as the two organize a joint podium discussion on industrial optics on Tuesday 13 September. All conference participants are welcomed to this special session followed by a welcome cocktail reception for enhancing and creating contacts.
The Annual General Assembly for EOS members will be held on Thursday 15 September.
