EOS Bi-Annual Meeting EOSAM 2016 in Berlin

Once again, the European Optical Society (EOS) will return to Berlin on September 26–30, 2016, to hold the EOS Bi-Annual Meeting in Adlershof. The Germany’s leading Science- and Technology Park Berlin-Adlershof is a suitable place to celebrate the European Optical Society’s landmark, its 25th Anniversary. The EOS has served for 25 years as the joint forum for all individuals, companies, organizations, educational institutions, as well as learned and professional societies, enabling the development of optics.

The topical meetings (TOMs) held at EOSAM 2016 are Silicon Photonics and Guided-Wave Optics, Freeform Optics (NEW), Optical System Design and Tolerancing, Diffractive Optics, Trends in Resonant Nanophotonics, Frontiers in Optical Metrology, Organic and Hybrid Semiconductor Materials and Devices, and the Adaptive Optics and Advanced Illumination Imaging.

Within the Topical Meetings, there is a new addition, the TOM on Freeform Optics, chaired by Kristina Uhlendorf, Sypro Optics GmbH (DE) and Wilbert Ijzerman, Philips Lighting (NL). Diffractive Optics will again be part of EOSAM. The Topical meetings on Diffractive Optics have been organized on nine occasions before, in most cases under the auspices of EOS (Savonlinna 1997, Jena 1999, Budapest 2001, Oxford 2003, Warsaw 2005, Barcelona 2007, Koli 2010, Delft 2012, Berlin 2014). Contributions are solicited on all areas of Diffractive Optics, and all application fields are concerned, including life sciences, sensing, solid state lighting, and solar photonics.

The conference week starts with tutorials for students on Monday. These tutorials cover aspects of the topical meetings during the week. Company and research institute visits are also being planned for our student attendees.

Keynote from Nobel Laureate Dr. Eric Betzig

One of the highlights of the conference will be on Tuesday morning, when we have the privilege to listen to a keynote speech from Dr. Eric Betzig, one of the Nobel Prize winners in Chemistry in 2014 for “the development of super-resolved fluorescence microscopy.” Dr. Betzig works on novel optical imaging tools in an effort to open new windows into molecular, cellular, and neurobiology. He is a group leader at the Janelia Research Campus of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

Nearly 20 companies were represented at the Industrial Exhibition in EOSAM 2014, and this year the exhibition is expected to grow even further. The Industrial Exhibition will take place on Wednesday, 28 September and Thursday, 29 September. Special sessions and award ceremonies

EOSAM will also include the special session on Grand Challenges of Photonics, organized for the fifth time. A special session for partners in EU projects will present interesting project results in the field of optics and photonics. EOSAM also includes the EOS Annual General Assembly, the EOS Fellows Ceremony, and various Award Ceremonies during the week. Among others, EOS will celebrate young professionals by presenting the EOS Early Career Awards for women and entrepreneurs. The best student oral and poster presentations will also be awarded.

The EOS Early Career Awards were last year delivered in Munich during the World of Photonics Congress, as LIGHT2015 Awards, part of a project promoting the importance of photonics to young people, entrepreneurs, and the general public in Europe. The EOS wants to encourage young people in pursuing careers in photonics and continues these awards as a legacy. The awards will be rendered during the EOSAM symposium on September 26–30, 2016, in Adlershof.
