The Risks of a Fragmented Reading of the Psalms Psalm 72 as a Case in Point

There is today especially in publications in German, a tendency to regard Ps 72,8–11.15.17cd as redactional. The article examines the reasons proposed for the excision of these verses from their context and finds them unconvincing. On the contrary the removal of these verses from their context runs the risk that the overall meaning of the psalm will be misinterpreted. Even vv. 18–19 and 1a.20, which are almost universally taken to be redactional and play hardly any part in the interpretation of the psalm, make an essential contribution, in the author's view, to the theology of the psalm. Even on the hypothesis that the psalm has a prior history of composition it is best to begin with a holistic, canonical interpretation.

On note actuellement, en exégèse germanophone, une tendance à considérer, au Psaume 72, les versets 8–11, 15, 17cd comme des ajouts rédactionnels. Cette étude analyse les arguments avancés pour extraire les versets en question de leur contexte, mais ne les considère pas comme probants. Bien au contraire, la séparation de ces versets hors de leur contexte amène à méconnaître le message fondamental de ce Psaume. Même les vv. 18–19 et 1a, 20, généralement considérés comme rédactionnels et ne jouant guère de rôle pour l'interprétation du Ps. 72, font partie intégrante de la théologie du Psaume, selon l'auteur. Même dans l'hypothèse de phases antérieures de ce Psaume, il faut l'interpréter avant tout de manière holistique et canonique.

Es gibt heute, vor allem in der deutschsprachigen Exegese, eine Tendenz, im Psalm 72 die Verse 8–11.15.17cd als redaktionell zu betrachten. Der Artikel überprüft die vorgetragenen Gründe für die Ausscheidung dieser Verse aus ihrem Kontext. Sie erweisen sich als nicht stichhaltig. Vielmehr birgt die Trennung dieser Verse von ihrem Kontext die Gefahr, die Gesamtaussage des Psalms zu verkennen. Sogar die Verse 18–19 und 1a.20, die fast allgemein als redaktionell gelten und kaum eine Rolle in der Interpretation von Ps 72 spielen, gehören nach Ansicht des Vf. wesentlich zur Theologie des Psalms. Auch unter Annahme der Hypothese, dass der Psalm Vorstufen hat, empfiehlt es sich, ihn zunächst holistisch, kanonisch zu interpretieren.
