The Race, Slavery, and Free Blacks microfilm collection is a product of the Race & Slavery Petitions Project, headed up by Loren Schweninger at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Series I, Petitions to Southern Leislatures, includes approximately 3,000 petitions, and 20,000 pages of documentary evidence. Series II, Petitions to Southern County Courts, 1775–1867, is much larger in scope, including approximately 15,500 petitions and 124,000 pages of documentary evidence from fifteen states and the District of Columbia. This collection offers a rich source of research material for researchers studying the history of slavery, race relations, free blacks, women, and court systems.
