Krieg und Gartenpartys. Oberflächen des Politischen bei Rainer Maria Rilke

Mirko Mandić
A detailed analysis of Rainer Maria Rilke's prose poem “Die Weise von Liebe und Tod des Cornets Christoph Rilke” raises the question, how literary texts can constitute a meaning in which political and aesthetic significations are undistinguishable and legitimated by the perceptible materiality of their signs. On the one hand, this means that operationable political meaning directly depends on the possibility of social self-description, which suggests that politics cannot get around without rhetoric and aesthetics. On the other hand, one has to ask what the distinguishing feature of a literature is that does not merely reveal a transparency for contingent historical matters but also provides a communication model within which the articulation of political identity (as imagination) becomes principally possible.
