Abstract

Phylogeny refers to the evolutionary origin of organisms. Phylogenetics deals with the investigation of phylogenies, which serve as representations of the evolutionary connections between different species. This tool facilitates the assessment of evolutionary links among different species. Molecular phylogenetic analysis utilizes the sequence of a prevalent gene or protein to evaluate the evolutionary correlation among species. The phylogenetic tree or a branching, tree-like figure is typically used to represent the evolutionary relationship that phylogenetic research reveals. In the past, phylogenetic trees were primarily confined to examining evolutionary biology and related fields such as systematics and taxonomy. This chapter elucidates the fundamental significance of evolutionary links, which may be effectively established through phylogenetic analysis. This analytical approach is pivotal in investigating evolutionary biology, systematics, taxonomy, and contemporary drug development.
