Abstract

In a modern biological context, it is quintessential to have quantitative tools to analyze and compute genomic data. Various fields such as mathematics, statistics, biology, and computational tools are integrated to manage the enormous amount of high-throughput data quantitatively and in a timely fashion. This has further led to newer paths of research and development, especially in the OMICS field, answering specific queries related to biology, transforming the proteomics, genomics, and metabolomics fields, and bringing newer paradigms to human health. Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary field of science as it conglomerates biology, computer science, information engineering, mathematics, and statistics for investigating and understanding biological data. Mathematical and statistical tools have been employed successfully to resolve biological queries through in silico analysis. Bioinformatics has shown a lot of promise in resolving many complex molecular biology queries through the merger and integration of mathematical and statistical tools. This chapter brings forth the fundamental aspects of bioinformatics, including various programs and methods associated with such programs and their implications in bioinformatics.
